A UK mountain bike pioneer, participated in the Atlanta Olympics. Professional racer on the world circuit until 1998 travelling the world with David Baker and Tim Gould who was his mentor. UK Olympic Team coach in Sydney and Athens. Gary in turn mentored Liam Killeen throughout his career. Gary still rides every day.
Raced professionally on World Cup circuit until 1998. 15 top 10 finishes in World Cup races. Frequently highest UK overall in World Cup, 4th overall being his best. Won Mammoth Mountain WC race in 1994. Podiumed there in 1995. Would have won at UK World Cup if chain hadn’t snapped 2kms from the finish; biggest career regret. Silver at European Championships. 12th (best finisher uk) at 1996 Olympics. Most likely the first mtb rider to follow a strict & monitored training programme. Excelled at altitude, mentored by the awesome Tim Gould. Loved racing and also happy on the road. Coached UK Olympic Team in Sydney & Athens. Guided Liam Killeen throughout his career, culminating in Liam becoming European & Commonwealth Champion, along with 5th & 7th placed finishes at the Olympic Games. Gary still loves the sport and rides every day if possible. Will possibly compete again at some point, whilst still active in adventure races & half marathons. Travelled the world with Tim Gould & David Baker during the 90′s. Very lucky to have been around during that period, but also delighted to beat them as his experience increased!
